One of the pleasures of being a cigar reviewer is getting to try cigars that fly well under the radar. Today we are smoking one such cigar, the Buena Vista Reserva Churchill or as the factory calls the size the Prominente. My buddy Jeff who lives up north was nice enough to gift this cigar to me the last time we had a smoke and I have been eyeballing it in my humidor ever since.

The Buena Vista Reserva is a classy looking cigar with it’s maroon, chrome, and black embossed label which looks very nice draped over it’s carmel brown wrapper. The Buena Vista cigar factory is located in Ecuador and it’s almost a Ecuadorian puro wrapper, binder, and filler with the exception of some Dominican filler mixed in.

The Buena Vista Reserva has a nice warm semi-sweet barnyard aroma and the pre light draw reveals a very nice amount of resistance. After toasting and lighting you will notice a very pleasant and mellow fermented tobacco flavor that would best be described as being “warm”, not temperature warm, but warm on the flavor spectrum. All of the Buena Vista flavors have a warm semi-sweet feel to them. The Buena Vista is at most a medium bodied smoke and the strength of it’s tobacco kick was very mild which might be perfect for those that do not enjoy feeling dizzy after smoking a cigar that’s too strong.

Buena Vista Reserva Prominente review

Creamy caramel and licorice were the most notable flavors in the Buena Vista Reserva and there were a couple of times when I could detect a subtle chocolate chip cookie note which was a nice surprise. The burn on the cigar was excellent as it was even and reliable all the way from start to finish. However the ash was very delicate and did not want to stay attached to the cigar. As I entered the final stages of this cigar the flavor of the tobacco on my tongue was noticeably sweet almost what you might get from a flavored cigar which was really interesting.

There are many times when I prefer to have a more mild/medium bodied cigar that still has interesting flavors and the Buena Vista Reserva is a great choice for just those occasions.

Wow, I’m smoking one now (first one) and I do not like it at all. I have only had it going for about 5 minutes now, but it tastes like burnt toast that is still smoking. I’ll give it some time and report back if it gets better. Right now I just want to put it out… I am smoking the torpedo though, so maybe they are different.
